Newly released federal records are shining a spotlight on Jeffrey Epstein’s private island operations, revealing that the convicted sex offender authorized the delivery of 330 gallons of industrial sulfuric acid while under federal investigation.
The documents raise questions about oversight failures and the unusual latitude Epstein enjoyed in maintaining complex operations despite scrutiny from federal authorities.
The procurement records, included in a massive disclosure by the Department of Justice (DOJ), show Epstein approved six 55-gallon drums of sulfuric acid for his Little St. James island in June 2018, processed through an entity linked to his holdings, LSJE LLC.

The documents indicate the chemical was requested for maintenance on the island’s reverse osmosis water system, referencing conductivity probes, replacement pH components, and cabling tied to the RO plant.
Sulfuric acid is widely used in industrial and water treatment applications, including pH regulation, filtration efficiency, and water softening—particularly on remote properties reliant on self-contained infrastructure.
Federal records contain no direct evidence of criminal misuse of the chemical, the Daily Express noted.
Despite that context, social media speculation exploded following the release.
Some X users suggested that the large quantity of sulfuric acid could have been misused to destroy evidence—or even human remains—though investigators have stressed there is no proof in the files to support such claims.
Online commentary reflected public fascination and outrage, with many calling for accountability for the systems that allowed Epstein’s operations to continue largely uninterrupted.
The sulfuric acid records are only a fraction of the broader Epstein Files, which include over three million pages of documents, roughly 2,000 videos, and nearly 180,000 images recovered from Epstein’s properties and electronic devices, according to the Daily Mail.
The disclosures also shed light on Epstein’s continued interactions with high-profile individuals, including emails suggesting a tentative 2014 visit to the island by Elon Musk, though the visit may never have occurred.
Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and denied bail due to flight risk concerns.
He had previously pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor and was registered as a sex offender. He died later that year in a New York jail cell in what officials ruled a suicide.
While federal investigators continue reviewing the newly released material, public attention has focused on the disturbing chemical order and the speculation it has inspired.
Critics warn that the documents illustrate how systemic oversights allowed Epstein to operate for years with little disruption, fueling both curiosity and outrage online.
