In a stunning new revelation, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced new details regarding Ryan Wesley Routh, who was arrested for attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump in September 2024.
The 59-year-old Routh previously traveled to Ukraine where he tried to curry favor with American volunteers in the country.

It was revealed that through his connections, he reportedly tried to obtain weapons of war from authorities in Ukraine, arguing in favor of killing Trump because it would be “bad” for Ukraine if he was elected to a second term.
Routh allegedly tried to get a rocket launcher-style “Stinger or RPG to take out Trump,” according to the DOJ.
In August 2024, Routh “attempt[ed] to acquire anti-aircraft weapons as direct evidence of his assassination attempt.
That month, Routh sought to purchase the devices online from an associate Routh believed to be a Ukrainian with access to military weapons,” the DOJ filing states.
“I need equipment so that Trump cannot get reelected,” Routh reportedly told his weapons connection, as Trending Politics noted.
“The two continued to discuss the possibility of Routh securing a rocket or missile launcher, with Routh sending his associate an image of President Trump’s plane and writing ‘Trump’s plane, he gets on and off daily,’” prosecutors said.
Routh is charged with two firearm offenses, including eliminating the serial number on an AK-47 rifle that he reportedly dropped outside the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump was on the fifth hole of his golf course when Secret Service agents opened fire on Routh, who immediately fled.
Upon being detained, a letter to “The World” was found in Routh’s possession, where he apologized for failing to assassinate the president and offered $150,000 to whomever was successful in carrying out such an evil task.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job,” the note read.
Cell phone data records show that Routh waited about 12 hours near Trump’s golf course until he had a direct line of sight at the president, per Trending Politics.
After searching Routh’s vehicle, investigators found six cell phones and “a Google search of how to travel from Palm Beach County to Mexico.” This suggests that the 59-year-old was planning to travel to Mexico if he was successful in assassinating Trump.
“12 pairs of gloves; a Hawaii Driver’s License in the Defendant’s name; a passport in the Defendant’s name” were also found, according to the filing.
