Kash Patel Fires FBI Agents, Shuts Public Corruption Unit

FBI Director Kash Patel fired multiple agents on Tuesday and shut down the bureau’s public corruption squad.

The firings involved at least three special agents connected to former special counsel Jack Smith’s investigations.

The agents had been named in documents released by Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley (R), in relation to the “Arctic Frost” probe.

The CR-15 unit, the FBI Washington Field Office’s federal corruption unit, was folded in the spring. The agents were formally fired this week.

Patel confirmed the actions in a Fox News interview.

“You’re darn right I fired those agents, you’re darn right I blew up CR-15, the public corruption squad,” he said.

“They tracked the communications of GOP Senators. They weaponized law enforcement against the American people. That era is over. We fired those who acted unethically, dismantled the corrupt CR-15 squad, and launched an investigation. Transparency and accountability aren’t slogans, they’re promises kept,” he added.

The agents had worked on subpoenas involving the phone toll records of members of Congress, per MSNBC.

NBC News reported that the firings follow a sequence of personnel changes tied to prior investigations.

The “Arctic Frost” probe was initially connected to claims that the Biden-era FBI monitored Republican members of Congress and investigated efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The allegations linked to “Arctic Frost” have largely collapsed under scrutiny, but the affected agents were still removed.

CR-15 had been involved in federal corruption investigations and cases connected to Jack Smith’s work.

NBC noted that the Public Integrity Section, which oversees prosecutions of public officials, had been reduced in recent years.

Trump-appointed officials also demoted senior supervisors connected to public corruption cases in Washington, D.C.

Some criminal cases against public officials were abandoned following personnel changes in the bureau and Justice Department.

Patel’s office confirmed the firings and the unit closure publicly.

Multiple news outlets reported that the CR-15 closure affected ongoing federal corruption investigations.

The firings and unit shutdown were part of broader personnel adjustments within the FBI.

The agents and the CR-15 unit were involved in previous investigations of public officials, white-collar crime, and corruption cases.

Patel stated that the bureau’s actions were necessary, confirming the removal of the agents and the closure of the unit.

Patel’s actions were met with half-hearted praise by conservatives, who argued that more should have been done against the agents.

“They should be prosecuted, not simply fired! They will now all go on state media as “experts” and write books!” another said.
