DOJ Unveils Shocking Charges Against Illegal Immigrant
Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a Venezuelan citizen living unlawfully in Bellevue, Nebraska, has been charged with attempted murder of a federal officer.
The charges also include assault of a federal officer with bodily injury.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, and United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods made the announcement regarding the criminal complaint filed against Hurtado-Cariaco.
Special Agents from Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI held an active immigration-related warrant for Hurtado-Cariaco’s arrest.
They encountered him near his residence in Sarpy County while he was driving, per a DOJ press release.
The agents initiated a traffic stop by activating their lights and sirens to pull him over. Hurtado-Cariaco complied by stopping his vehicle and exiting with his arms raised as instructed.
Despite following initial commands, when agents attempted to handcuff him, Hurtado-Cariaco resisted arrest and engaged in a physical struggle with one of the Special Agents.
During the confrontation, both Hurtado-Cariaco and the agent fell to the ground. Hurtado-Cariaco managed to throw the agent with enough force that the agent struck his head and elbow on the pavement, sustaining injuries.
A second Special Agent then intervened and engaged with Hurtado-Cariaco in an effort to subdue and detain him. Both men ended up on the ground during the struggle.
While the agents tried to control Hurtado-Cariaco, he maneuvered behind the injured agent and placed him in a chokehold. Hurtado-Cariaco ignored commands from the second agent and continued choking the injured officer.
In response, the second agent applied a chokehold on Hurtado-Cariaco to stop the assault. Hurtado-Cariaco eventually released the chokehold but then broke free from the second agent’s grasp.
He then fled on foot, prompting a foot pursuit by the agents. Officers tracked Hurtado-Cariaco to his apartment in Bellevue, where he was arrested without further incident.
Following the arrest, the injured agent was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi emphasized that deadly violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated by the Department of Justice.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche highlighted that the arrest of Hurtado-Cariaco, a suspected member of the Tren de Aragua gang, demonstrates the department’s commitment to protecting law enforcement officers.
U.S. Attorney Lesley A. Woods added that violence against federal law enforcement officers in Nebraska will not be accepted and praised the agents for maintaining professionalism despite facing potentially deadly violence.
Hurtado-Cariaco appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge the day after his arrest. The judge ordered him detained and scheduled preliminary and detention hearings.
The criminal complaint formally accuses Hurtado-Cariaco but does not establish guilt. He is presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
If convicted, Hurtado-Cariaco faces a possible prison sentence, a fine, and a supervised release term.
Homeland Security Investigations is leading the investigation into the case.
