Elon Musk Says Federal Workers Must Fill Out Weekly Productivity Reports or Resign

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk announced a new initiative requiring all federal employees to submit weekly productivity reports or be considered resigned, in line with the Trump administration’s push for government efficiency.

Musk revealed the policy in a post on X, stating that federal employees would receive an email asking them to outline their productivity from the previous week.

“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk wrote. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed the directive, calling it part of the administration’s commitment to accountability.

“As part of the Trump Administration’s commitment to an efficient and accountable federal workforce, OPM is asking employees to provide a brief summary of what they did last week by the end of Monday, CC’ing their manager,” an OPM spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

The White House backed the plan, with Communications Director Steven Cheung posting on X in support of the move. “This is such a good idea and even White House staffers can list all of the great things they’ve done this week, just like everyone in the Administration should do as well,” Cheung wrote.

The initiative has faced backlash from federal employee unions. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) criticized the policy, calling it “cruel and disrespectful.”

“It is cruel and disrespectful for federal employees to be forced to justify their job duties to this out-of-touch, privileged, unelected billionaire who has never performed one single hour of honest public service in his life,” the union wrote in a post on X.

The reports come as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues efforts to eliminate wasteful spending in the federal government. DOGE recently announced findings of widespread financial mismanagement, including the existence of millions of government credit cards.

“The US government currently has ~4.6M active credit cards/accounts, which processed ~90M unique transactions for ~$40B of spend[ing] in FY24,” DOGE posted on X.

The Trump administration has strongly supported Musk’s efforts, with President Donald Trump himself urging Musk to push further.

“Elon is doing a great job, but I would like to see him get more aggressive. Remember, we have a country to save, but ultimately, to make greater than ever before. MAGA!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Musk quickly responded to Trump’s call for action. “Will do, Mr. President!” he posted on X.

This move aligns with the broader efforts of the Trump administration to streamline government operations and ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used effectively, per Fox News.

Supporters of the policy argue that it will hold federal employees accountable and eliminate bureaucratic inefficiency. Critics, however, claim it undermines worker rights and creates an unnecessary burden on employees.

The initiative is expected to face legal challenges as unions and federal employees push back against what they view as an overreach by the administration.

Musk and the Trump administration remain committed to seeing the initiative through, signaling more aggressive efforts in the coming weeks to reform government operations.
