GOP Lawmakers Overrule DOJ: “We will not rest until the full extent of President Biden’s involvement in the family’s schemes are revealed”
GOP lawmakers were not impressed with Hunter Biden’s sweetheart plea deal and vowed to continue the investigations into the Biden family schemes.
House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said:
“These charges against Hunter Biden and sweetheart plea deal have no impact on the Oversight Committee’s investigation. We will not rest until the full extent of President Biden’s involvement in the family’s schemes are revealed.
“Let’s be clear: the Department of Justice’s charges against President Biden’s son Hunter reveal a two-tiered system of justice.
“Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling, and possibly bribery.”
According to Fox News:
U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware David C. Weiss indicated that absent the plea deal, Biden could face two years in prison for the tax charges and up to 10 years for the firearms charge.
A judge must still accept the plea deal announced today.
“A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors,” Weiss’ office said.
Prosecutors plan to recommend a sentence of probation for those counts while Biden claims he borrowed money from a friend to pay his back taxes.
Biden will admit to illegally possessing a weapon following his 2018 purchase of a handgun while high on crack.
As part of that admission, he expects to be entered in a diversion program,
All told Hunter will get two years probation and enter a diversion program.
Chris Clark, attorney for Hunter Biden said: “With the announcement of two agreements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the Unites States Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved.
“Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments when due pursuant to a plea agreement.
“A firearm charge, which will be subject to a pretrial diversion agreement and will not be the subject of the plea agreement, will also be filed by the Government.
“I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”
According to NBC:
Last year, Biden has paid the outstanding taxes that he owed for 2017 and 2018, the years named in the charges.
The felony gun possession charge will be resolved in what is known as pre-trial diversion agreement, where charges are dropped if certain conditions are met by a defendant, such as not committing a crime for a given time period.
The specific conditions in Biden’s gun case were not disclosed in the court documents.
A judge will schedule a date for an arraignment within the next several weeks. Hunter Biden is expected to self-surrender to Delaware authorities and will be processed by U.S. Marshals there.
