John Fetterman Calls Out Other Democrats for REFUSING to Stand During State of the Union
‘Acting Like a Normal American’: John Fetterman Breaks With Democrats During Trump’s State of the Union
During President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night, the behavior of most Democrats on the House floor drew as much attention as the speech itself.
Instead of standing to honor grieving families and American veterans, the vast majority of Democrats stayed seated in protest.
When President Trump recognized the family of Iryna Zarutska, honored Erika Kirk — a widow — and paid tribute to multiple U.S. veterans, many Democrats refused to get up.
In a moment that cut across the usual partisan theater, Sen. John Fetterman (D–PA) was one of the very few Democrats who did stand, clap, and show basic respect.
Fetterman Stands for Gold Star Families, Widows, and Veterans
Fetterman later called out members of his own party for refusing to acknowledge the families and heroes highlighted during the State of the Union.
He made it clear that, politics aside, honoring widows, political prisoners, and American service members should be the minimum standard of decent behavior in the U.S. Congress.
Watch Fetterman describe why he stood while other Democrats sat:
🚨 BREAKING: Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) says he was one of the Democrats to stand up for Iryna Zarutska and Erika Kirk at Trump's State of the Union
"Even Erika Kirk. Can't we just be more kind to a WIDOW? How can't we acknowledge that?" 💯

In his comments, Fetterman explained that he stood and applauded for:
- The family that lost the young Ukrainian girl
- The Venezuelan political prisoner highlighted by Trump
- Veterans who put their lives on the line for the United States
He also backed Trump’s decision to strike Iranian sites, saying he will always clap for actions and policies he agrees with — even when they come from the other party.
“Even Erika Kirk. Can’t we just be more kind to a WIDOW? How can’t we acknowledge that?” Fetterman said, underscoring that some things should be above partisan games.
Fetterman added that if he disagrees with something in a speech, he simply withholds his applause — he doesn’t scream, heckle, or try to disrupt the event.
In other words, he behaves like a normal American adult, not an activist trying to go viral.
Here’s another angle of Fetterman breaking with his own party:

While Some Democrats Skipped the Speech for ‘Protest Events’
Not every Democrat even bothered to show up to the State of the Union.
A number of them chose to boycott the address entirely and instead held alternative “protest” events — which quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons.
One such event, featuring bizarre “dancing frogs,” looked more like a social media stunt than a serious response to a major address on national security, the economy, border policy, and veterans’ issues.
Fetterman wasn’t impressed with that circus either:
John Fetterman calls out his own party for humiliating themselves by yelling through Trump’s State of the Union speech and holding cringe protest events:
“I don’t believe as a Democrat that dancing frogs really move the ball for us”🤣

From Hoodies to a Suit: Fetterman Shows Up for a Serious Night
Another detail that caught people’s eye: Fetterman, known for wearing hoodies and shorts on Capitol Hill, arrived at the State of the Union in a full suit.
On a night focused on national security, foreign policy, the economy, and respect for the military, he chose to show up in formal attire and conduct himself accordingly.

The Only Democrat to Greet Trump and Shake His Hand
Fetterman didn’t just stand and clap at key moments — he also did something almost no other Democrat was willing to do: he greeted President Trump personally.
As Trump entered the House chamber, cameras caught Fetterman stepping forward to shake the president’s hand.
According to Fetterman, he believes he was the only Democrat to do so.
Watch the handshake here:

Speaking to Fox, Fetterman explained his decision clearly:
“Yes, I shook his hand, of course. He walked in, and I’m always going to do that, for sure.”
Whatever anyone thinks of Trump, Fetterman’s point is simple: if you are a United States senator, you should at least be able to greet the sitting president, respect the office, and honor the families and veterans recognized on the floor.
Is Fetterman Out of Step With Democrats—or Are Voters With Him?
Fetterman has already broken with Democrats on several high-profile issues, including border security, Israel and foreign policy, and now decorum at the State of the Union.
Each time he does, voters notice — and many of them openly wonder whether he still fits inside the modern Democratic Party at all.
Here’s just a sample of what people are saying online:
Sir, you are the only good and decent Democrat in this country! Thank you for standing with the people! 🇺🇸🙏🏻

Senator Fetterman has earned my respect.
He’s a class act.

John Fetterman, the only Democrat in the chamber who still has his soul.

Between standing for widows and veterans, applauding targeted strikes on hostile Iranian sites, showing up in a suit, and shaking President Trump’s hand, Fetterman is sending a message:
you can disagree on policy and still behave like a respectful adult in Congress.
Your thoughts? Do you think Sen. Fetterman is out of step with his party—or closer to where normal Americans are on respect, national security, and basic decency?
