JUST IN: Roberts Rebukes Liberal Justice For Interrupting Birthright Citizenship Hearing

SHARE

Although Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has rubbed many conservatives the wrong way with his votes on a variety of hot-button issues, he did manage to stand up to one of the court’s most liberal members.

The incident occurred during oral arguments on Thursday in a case seeking to address the issue of birthright citizenship.

As Solicitor General John Sauer attempted to refute Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s assertions about the Trump administration’s position, Sotomayor repeatedly interrupted.

At one point, Roberts got involved, as Fox News reported:

Sotomayor argued that Trump’s order invalidating birthright citizenship violated four Supreme Court precedents, a claim Sauer attempted to contest before Sotomayor interrupted him once again.

“Can I hear the rest of his answer?” Roberts then interjected.

Sauer then elaborated on his statement before questions continued.

This week’s Supreme Court arguments have attracted some social media attention:

MADNESS: C-SPAN caller exposes “Chinese maternity houses” where the Chinese take advantage of our Birthright Citizenship.

TODAY the Supreme Court is taking up arguments to maintain or overturn birthright citizenship for illegals.

“They’re houses where the Chinese government takes citizens that, when they’re in their seventh or eighth month, they ship them here for a month. They let them have their children. And then once they have their children, they take them back to China when now they’re US citizens.”

“But they’re raised in China. They’re loyal to China. We know they’re doing it, but they’re still getting away with it.”

OVERTURN IT! The Supreme Court must be bold on this issue.

The Hill provided additional information about Sauer:

It marks Sauer’s second argument since the Senate confirmed him to the post. It is his fourth in total, according to Supreme Court research database Oyez.

Sauer entered the administration after emerging as President Trump’s top personal appellate attorney in several of his criminal and civil cases.

He is most well-known for successfully convincing the Supreme Court last year that former presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution, a landmark ruling that helped Trump delay some of his criminal trials until after the election.

Sauer is a former clerk to former U.S. Circuit Judge J. Michael Luttig, a conservative and Trump critic, and former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
