During an appearance on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, the former first lady said that her decision to skip public events that her husband attended had nothing to do with their marital status but rather her well-being.
Michelle pointed out that she was “making a choice” for herself.
“That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with disappointing people,” she said.
“I mean, so much so that this year people were, you know, they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” she added.
As Trending Politics reported, the Obamas have been married since 1992. However, as of recently, the couple has faced divorce rumors, given that they have rarely been seen together for months.
For example, Michelle skipped President Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2025, despite her husband being present at the historic event.
During the podcast episode, the former first lady blamed “society” for the rumors surrounding her and her husband.
“That this couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?” she said. “That’s what society does to us.”
Michelle claimed that women sometimes feel pressured to explain their decisions.
“We start actually, finally going, ‘What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?’” she said.
“And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible,” she added.
The former first lady said that despite the divorce rumors, she still finds time to pay attention to different causes.
“And I still find time to you know, give speeches, to be out there in the world, to work on projects. I still care about girls’ education,” she said.
As TTOA previously reported, the former president recently admitted that his tenure at the White House created a “deep deficit” with his wife.
“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” Barack Obama said earlier this month. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”
Michelle’s latest comments come after she explained the difficulties of her marriage during a podcast episode last month, per Yahoo Entertainment.
“People always ask me and Barack, how did we stay hopeful in, not just the eight years that we were in the White House, but beyond,” Michelle said in March.
“Because, let me tell you, there was a lot of negative energy flipping our way — a lot of rumors, a lot of gossip, a lot of, you know, my husband wasn’t born in this country … we weren’t patriotic, he didn’t get into Harvard,” she added.
“Don’t let that negative energy enter into your space. These are people who don’t know you. A lot of this stuff is made up, and it does not feed you,” she went on. “That doesn’t mean you don’t stay informed, but staying informed has nothing to do with the comment section. It has everything to do with the content of the stories that you take in.”
