Speculation over a potential pardon for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin by President Donald Trump has ignited a fierce political battle between Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and members of the progressive Democratic “Squad,” particularly Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

Chauvin is currently serving a combined sentence of more than 40 years after being convicted in both federal and state courts for the 2020 death of George Floyd during an arrest. 

Now, conservative commentators and public figures have increasingly pushed for a reevaluation of the circumstances surrounding Floyd’s death. 

Greene has taken a firm position on the issue, embracing the idea of a pardon and expressing sympathy for Chauvin’s legal plight. 

“I strongly support Derek Chauvin being pardoned and released from prison. George Floyd died of a drug overdose,” she posted to her followers on X.

That statement was quickly met with harsh criticism from Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. 

Omar condemned Greene’s message and characterized Chauvin’s actions as premeditated and malicious. 

“Absolutely vile. Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd in a modern day lynching—it was chilling and intentional,” Omar posted in reply.

Omar also noted that even if President Trump issued a federal pardon, Chauvin would still remain in prison due to the state-level conviction handed down in Minnesota. 

“He will forever be a convicted murderer in the eyes of the law and the world,” Omar added.

Greene did not let the comments go unanswered. 

In a sharp rebuttal, she took aim at both Omar’s political stance and her personal background. 

“Busy day fighting Democrats. First Mike Lawler who is trying to destroy Trump’s agenda and now illegal alien Ilhan Omar of Somalia,” Greene said in a follow-up post.

The back-and-forth escalated further when Greene made a personal accusation in return. 

“Ilhan, you know what’s vile? Having sex with and marrying your brother!!!” she wrote, referencing a longstanding accusation against her that she has previously denied. 

Omar has labeled such claims as a disgusting lie and called them a fabrication of right-wing conspiracy theorists.

Despite the denials, the Daily Mail has reported that the accusation has persisted among some constituents in Omar’s district, particularly within the Somali community in Minnesota. 

No charges have been filed related to the claim.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), another progressive Democrat, also jumped into the fray, pushing back against Greene’s claim about Floyd’s cause of death. 

“You can lie to yourself all day, but the rest of us remember exactly what happened,” Crockett posted on X.

Greene responded by posting a screenshot of George Floyd’s toxicology report, which listed elevated levels of fentanyl and norfentanyl in his system. 

She linked Floyd’s death to the broader fentanyl crisis, a major issue of concern among conservatives and law enforcement officials.

“George Floyd died from a drug overdose. He was one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans killed by fentanyl that is trafficked across our border by cartels,” Greene wrote. 

She then accused Crockett of downplaying the national drug epidemic. 

“Jasmine Crockett doesn’t care about Americans killed by drugs like George Floyd, she cares about protecting cartels from being deported.”
