Newsom Affirms Commitment to ‘Trans’ Youth Ahead of 2028: ‘I Want to See Trans Kids’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is drawing national attention as he positions himself for a potential 2028 presidential run while navigating controversy over “trans” policies in schools.

With the Trump administration taking a firm stance on gender-related sports participation and enforcing federal civil rights law, Newsom is defending his record amid legal challenges and political debate.

The issue has quickly become a central cultural and political flashpoint leading up to the midterm elections.

In a recent conversation with New York Times contributor Ezra Klein, Newsom highlighted his personal commitment to supporting “trans” youth.

“I want to see trans kids,” he said, adding, “I have a trans godson. There’s no governor that’s done more pro-trans legislation than I have. No one has been a stronger advocate for the LGBTQ community.”

Federal authorities are reviewing California’s education and athletic policies after identifying potential Title IX violations.

According to LifeSite News, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights found that the California Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation may have allowed male students to compete on female sports teams, prompting ongoing investigations.

Enforcement actions have been threatened to ensure compliance with federal law.

The controversy centers on a male athlete, identified as “AB Hernandez,” competing on female teams at Jurupa Valley High School.

Several opposing schools forfeited competitions in protest, and President Trump posted on Truth Social: “California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow ‘MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.’”

In response, the Department of Justice, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, filed a civil rights lawsuit, asserting that the state’s policies are both illegal and unfair under Title IX.

TTOA previously reported that Newsom acknowledged concerns about competitive fairness.

Speaking with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, he said, “I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair.”

Despite these concerns, he continues to emphasize his pro-LGBT advocacy, navigating the balance between civil rights and athletic participation.

These policies have also drawn criticism from women’s sports advocacy groups.

The WDI USA Black Women’s Caucus stated, “It’s not fair nor safe for biological women. There has to be another solution for trans women to be able to compete athletically besides having them compete against biological women.”

Their concerns illustrate the ongoing debate between inclusion policies and protecting opportunities for female athletes.

California’s legislative framework supports these policies. The School Success and Opportunity Act (AB 1266) allows students to participate in sports according to their gender identity, providing legal backing for current athletic league decisions.

Newsom has also signed SB 107, establishing California as a sanctuary for minors seeking gender-affirming care, alongside measures requiring public school ID cards to display Trevor Project contact information and providing free menstrual products in male restrooms.

The implications extend beyond California. The Department of Education has opened additional Title IX investigations in other states to ensure compliance with federal guidance.

Meanwhile, debates over “trans” participation in women’s sports continue to intensify, with several states adopting more restrictive policies.

Newsom’s approach, combining advocacy with recognition of equity concerns, could influence both California politics and the Democratic Party’s positioning as he eyes 2028.

As midterm elections approach, voters will watch whether Newsom maintains his pro-LGBT record or adjusts policies in response to federal enforcement and parental opposition.

The debate is expected to evolve as federal and state authorities continue to weigh enforcement actions.
