Pope Leo XIV Blasts Trump Over Iran Attack, Says Peace is Not Achieved Through Threats
The head of the Catholic Church delivered a clear message on the escalating conflict in the Middle East as President Donald Trump continues military operations against Iran.
An X post circulating Sunday summed up the moment: “The Pope is calling for peace while Trump promises overwhelming force in Iran. The world is watching what happens next.”
Pope Leo XIV spoke from the Vatican during his Sunday Angelus prayer, saying he is following events in Iran and the region with “deep concern” as tensions spiral.
He warned that peace cannot be achieved through weapons or threats.
“Stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death,” the Pope said.
Instead, he called for diplomacy and dialogue. “Only reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue” can secure lasting peace, he added during his address.
The Pope’s comments came just after President Trump vowed to strike Iran “with a force that has never been seen before” if the regime continues retaliation following the death of its supreme leader.
Trump ordered major strikes on Iranian targets after nuclear negotiations collapsed, saying the mission is about protecting Americans and stopping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
“Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said during remarks from Mar-a-Lago, calling the regime “vicious” and dangerous.
The President acknowledged that casualties could occur. “The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties,” he said, while still calling the mission “noble” and necessary for the future.
Meanwhile, the Pope warned that the world is on the brink of something far worse if escalation continues. He described the current path as risking a “tragedy of enormous proportions.”
“I address to the parties involved a heartfelt appeal to assume the moral responsibility to stop the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss,” he said.
The pontiff urged nations to return to diplomacy and put the good of their people first. He emphasized that populations across the region want peaceful coexistence built on justice and stability.
The remarks come as Iran has launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks against Israel and U.S. bases across the Middle East following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes, per the Daily Mail.
Air raid sirens and explosions have already been reported across Israeli cities, with regional airspace disrupted as the conflict widens.
The Pope’s intervention highlights the growing global concern about the scale of the conflict and the potential for a broader regional war.
At the same time, Trump has doubled down on confronting the Iranian regime, arguing that its actions at home and abroad justify decisive military action.
I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and in Iran during this tumultuous time. Stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death, but only through reasonable,…
