Intruder Smashes Through VP’s Home Windows While Secret Service Stands Guard
A male suspect was physically detained by Secret Service agents after breaking into Vice President JD Vance’s Cincinnati residence in the early morning hours of Monday, January 6.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight when Secret Service personnel assigned to protect the vice president’s property observed a suspect fleeing from the home.
Agents immediately moved to physically detain the individual before turning him over to local authorities.
Multiple windows on the exterior of the residence sustained significant damage during the break-in, according to reports.
Law enforcement officers spent several hours at the scene documenting the destruction and collecting evidence.
The Secret Service confirmed that the residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Vice President Vance and his family were not in Ohio when the break-in occurred.
“An adult male was taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department after being detained by U.S. Secret Service personnel for causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with the Vice President,” a Secret Service spokesperson told the Daily Mail.
The spokesperson added that the suspect “was physically detained by Secret Service agents assigned to the Vice President’s home” in the moments following the property damage.
Local media outlets documented the scene, showing large holes in multiple windows of the vice president’s home.
Police officers could be seen patrolling the property and entering and exiting the residence throughout the overnight hours.
The Secret Service arrived at the vandalized property during the night but had departed by early Monday morning.
The agency announced it is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the United States Attorney’s Office to pursue charges against those responsible for damaging the property.
At least one person remains in custody in connection with the break-in, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the incident at this time.
The Ohio property serves as the primary residence for the second family when they are not at their official residence in Washington DC.
The Vance family purchased the Cincinnati home for $1.4 million.
The luxurious rural estate overlooks the Ohio River and encompasses 2.3 acres of land.
The property represents one of several real estate holdings owned by the vice president and his wife, the Daily Mail says.
Vance and his wife Usha also own a home on Capitol Hill in Washington DC and another property in Alexandria, Virginia.
The couple acquired these properties while Vance served as the United States Senator representing Ohio.
Following his inauguration and taking of the vice presidential oath of office in January 2025, Vance and his wife have resided with their three children at the Naval Observatory.
This location serves as the official residence for the Vice President of the United States.
The Naval Observatory has housed vice presidents and their families for decades, providing security and accommodations befitting the office.
The Vance family has maintained their other properties while living at the official residence.
