Sen. Roy Blunt to Vote No on Supreme Court Nominee

A “Show Me State” senator announced Sunday he would vote against confirming Judge Ketanji Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Senator Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) explained to “ABC This Week” host George Stephanopoulos what he based his decision to oppose her on.

“Have you made up your mind yet?” the network host asked Sen. Blunt Sunday.

“Well, I have George,” replied Blunt. “You know, my sense is that the president certainly had every good intention and every right in the campaign to talk about putting the first Black woman on the Court. I think it’s time for that to happen.”

“I was hoping that I could be part of that.”

The senator described his conversation with Judge Jackson as “great” before noting his two main criteria for the nominee. He considered it important to determine if the nominee is qualified for the job and, if so, what is her judicial philosophy.

“She is certainly qualified, got a great personality,” Blunt said. “But the judicial philosophy seems to be not the philosophy of looking at what the law says, and the Constitution says, and applying that. He believes Jackson follows a different method where judges look at the Constitution, and even the law, as a more flexible instrument. The senator said there are cases that show that that’s her view.

Blunt acknowledged the reality that she is certainly going to be confirmed.

“I think it’ll be a high point for the country to see her go on the Court and take her unique perspective to the Court,” he declared. “But I don’t think she’s the kind of judge that will really do the kind of work that I think needs to be done by the Court and I won’t be supporting her.”

“But, I’ll be joining others in understanding the importance of this moment.”

The Missouri Republican joins colleagues Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) who also announced they will not be supporting Jackson’s nomination. Republican Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) said last week she would be voting for Jackson, likely preventing the need for Vice President Harris to break a tie vote in the Senate.
