Rep. Doug LaMalfa, a longtime Republican lawmaker representing Northern California, has died at the age of 65, according to statements from GOP officials.

LaMalfa, a fourth-generation rice farmer, was serving his seventh term in the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s First District, where he focused on agriculture, water management, and forestry issues.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) paid tribute to LaMalfa, calling him a devoted father, husband and steadfast advocate for his district.

“Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children during this difficult time,” Emmer said in a statement.

LaMalfa’s passing prompted condolences from colleagues, community members and national leaders alike, who noted his decades-long dedication to rural communities.

LaMalfa grew up immersed in Northern California’s agricultural life, working alongside his family on the rice farm that had been in their family for generations.

According to Trending Politics, he later attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, earning a degree in agricultural business, blending practical farming knowledge with formal education.

These experiences shaped his approach to policy, emphasizing economic development, land stewardship and the sustainability of rural industries.

Before serving in Congress, LaMalfa held elected office in the California State Assembly and State Senate.

During his tenure at the state level, he became known for championing water infrastructure improvements, forestry management and legislation supporting small farms and resource-based businesses.

His advocacy established him as a reliable conservative voice on issues affecting rural residents.

Elected to the U.S. House in 2012, LaMalfa continued his focus on policies benefiting farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.

He served on key committees, including Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Transportation and Infrastructure, using his positions to influence legislation related to water rights, land use, and environmental management.

Colleagues frequently praised his dedication to representing constituents’ interests, particularly in the agricultural sector.

Throughout his career, LaMalfa was recognized for his hands-on approach, often visiting farms and rural businesses across his sprawling district to understand local challenges firsthand.

His constituents appreciated his practical perspective, which he brought to every legislative discussion and committee meeting.

Supporters say he remained committed to bridging the gap between federal policy and the needs of rural communities.

LaMalfa’s unexpected death marks the loss of a significant figure in California politics, one who combined personal experience in agriculture with decades of public service.

This is a breaking story.
