Columbian President Calls Trump a ‘White Slaver’ Amid Tariff Showdown

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has launched a fiery critique of President Donald Trump, accusing him of acting like a “white slaver” and being on a path to “wipe out the human species.”

The comments come amid escalating tensions following a dispute over U.S. deportation flights to Colombia and retaliatory economic measures.

The conflict began when Colombia blocked two U.S. deportation flights carrying Colombian nationals, according to the Daily Mail. In response, Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on Colombian imports and revoked visas for Colombian government officials, warning that the tariffs would rise to 50 percent within a week if cooperation was not restored.

Facing swift economic pressure, Petro reversed course, offering to use his own presidential plane to facilitate the deportations.

“To facilitate the dignified return of the compatriots who were to arrive in the country this morning from deportation flights, I offer my presidential plane,” he announced.

Despite the apparent climbdown, Petro unleashed a barrage of public criticism against Trump, accusing him of greed and arrogance.

“You don’t like our freedom, okay. I don’t shake hands with white slavers,” Petro said.

In a scathing message posted to social media, he further warned, “You can try to carry out a coup with your economic strength and your arrogance, but you will never rule us.”

Petro escalated his rhetoric, accusing Trump of endangering humanity through what he described as reckless policies.

“I don’t like your oil, Trump. You’re going to wipe out the human species because of greed,” he said.

Petro also criticized Trump for allegedly viewing Colombians as inferior.

“It’s difficult [to negotiate] because you consider me an inferior race, and I’m not, nor is any Colombian,” he said.

In retaliation for the U.S. tariffs, Petro announced his own measures, imposing a 25 percent tariff on U.S. goods entering Colombia, with plans to increase the rate to 50 percent. This reciprocal action has further strained the historically strong alliance between the two nations.

Petro also criticized what he called the “undignified” use of military planes to deport Colombian nationals, demanding respect for his people.

“If that country sends them back, it should be with dignity and respect for them and for our country,” he said.

The White House dismissed Petro’s rhetoric and emphasized the importance of international cooperation on deportations. In a statement, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Colombia’s eventual cooperation “makes clear to the world that America is respected again.”

“President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States,” she said.

Despite the contentious exchanges, Petro expressed a willingness to discuss differences with Trump “over a glass of whiskey,” but cast doubt on the feasibility of such talks, stating, “It’s difficult because you don’t respect me or my people.”

The standoff has drawn attention from international observers, with Will Freeman, a fellow for Latin America studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, describing the situation as “a bold and daring escalation on both sides.”

Freeman noted that Colombia has long been a strategic ally of the United States in the region, making the fallout significant.
