Deadly Mass Shooting at Brown University leaves Two Dead, Eight Injured as Suspect Remains at Large

President Donald Trump urged Americans to pray for the victims after a deadly mass shooting rocked Brown University on Saturday, leaving at least two people dead and eight others critically injured.

The shooting unfolded on the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island, as students were taking final exams. Brown University officials placed the campus on immediate lockdown while law enforcement flooded the area searching for the suspect, who remains at large.

Trump addressed the tragedy shortly after returning to the White House aboard Marine One.

“I’ve been fully briefed on the Brown University situation. What a terrible thing it is. All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt,” Trump told reporters. “It’s a shame. Just pray.”

The president initially posted on Truth Social that the suspect was in custody, a statement later corrected after police clarified that no arrest had been made. Authorities said the confusion stemmed from an early detention that was later determined to be unrelated.

“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene,” Trump wrote in an updated post. “The suspect is NOT in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims.”

Police say the attack began near the Barus and Holley Engineering building, a seven-story complex housing classrooms, laboratories, and offices. Reports indicate the shooter entered the building while exams were in session.

Students and staff were instructed to run, hide, or fight, silence their phones, and shelter in place. Images from the scene showed armed officers in tactical gear sweeping the campus as ambulances lined nearby streets.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that the suspect entered the engineering building through unlocked doors. Roughly an hour after the initial alert, authorities reported additional shots were fired several blocks away on Governor Street, raising fears the shooter may have fled the campus area.

Vice President J.D. Vance also responded, offering prayers and confirming federal involvement.

“Terrible news out of Rhode Island this evening. We’re all monitoring the situation and the FBI stands ready to help,” Vance wrote on X. “We’re all thinking of and praying for the victims tonight.”

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Bureau personnel were assisting local authorities and urged the public to pray for those affected, the Daily Mail reported.

Brown University later confirmed the deaths of two victims and said eight others remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The university warned that the situation remains active and dangerous.

“We know there is a lot of fear and uncertainty in the community right now,” the university said in a statement. “Law enforcement continues to search for the suspect. Please follow all instructions and remain sheltered.”

Police described the suspect as a man dressed in black clothing. No motive has been released.

The shooting marks one of more than 70 school-related shootings nationwide this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

As law enforcement continues the manhunt, officials warned residents to avoid the area and remain vigilant. The campus remains locked down as investigators work to piece together what happened during one of the deadliest incidents in Brown University’s history.
