DOGE Reveals That Private Contractors Exploited the Federal Government
Elon Musk, after two months as a cost-cutting advisor to President Donald Trump, continues to uncover startling examples of government waste. In a recent Fox News interview, Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team highlighted how private contractors exploited the government during the previous administration.
One particularly egregious case involved a simple 10-question survey about Americans’ use of national parks. Despite the Department of the Interior receiving approximately $3.3 billion annually, a contractor charged nearly $1 billion—almost a third of the department’s budget—for this survey. Musk noted that such a survey could have been conducted for about $10,000 using platforms like SurveyMonkey.

Musk expressed his astonishment at the scale of waste encountered, stating, “We routinely encounter wastes of a billion dollars or more.” He emphasized that there appeared to be no feedback loop to utilize the survey results, rendering the expenditure even more wasteful.
As a special government employee with a 130-day tenure, Musk has been working to set DOGE on a path to trim $1 trillion in federal waste within its first year. When asked about extending his tenure, Musk indicated that it might be unnecessary, as most of the work to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars would be accomplished within the current timeframe.
DOGE’s efforts have not been without controversy. Some canceled contract receipts have been removed from the department’s website, and instances of double-counting have been reported. Despite these issues, Musk and his team have identified numerous instances of federal spending that were undeniably wasteful or indicative of political patronage.
For example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently canceled a $2 billion grant intended for a shell company established by failed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. Additionally, the Department of Agriculture terminated hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts for projects in South America related to “gender equity” and “worker empowerment.”
More than a month ago, Musk and President Trump significantly reduced the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), an organization the administration viewed as a partisan waste misaligned with its America First agenda. This move is projected to save approximately $40 billion annually, as Trending Politics reported.
Similar plans were announced for major staffing reductions at the Department of Health and Human Services. Concurrently, the Department of Education is downsizing to a skeleton crew following President Trump’s executive order to dismantle the agency.
Musk’s role in these reforms has drawn both praise and criticism. Supporters commend his commitment to eliminating wasteful spending, while detractors argue that the cuts are too aggressive and lack transparency. Despite the controversy, Musk remains focused on achieving substantial reductions in government expenditure.
In addition to addressing wasteful spending, Musk has faced challenges related to his private ventures. Tesla has experienced vandalism and protests, which Musk attributes to misinformation and far-left propaganda. He has condemned these actions, emphasizing Tesla’s mission to produce high-quality electric vehicles and contribute positively to society.
Musk’s involvement with DOGE has also led to political engagements. He met with Republican senators to discuss turning DOGE’s budget cuts into law through budget rescissions, an obscure legislative tool that could formalize the savings achieved. Musk expressed enthusiasm for this approach, seeing it as a way to solidify the reductions in government spending.
Despite the challenges and controversies, Musk remains optimistic about the impact of DOGE’s initiatives. He believes that the “revolution” in government efficiency will benefit Americans by reducing waste and reallocating resources more effectively. As his tenure progresses, Musk continues to advocate for systemic changes aimed at creating a more efficient and accountable government.
