AOC Surges in 2028 Dem Primary Poll, Sparking Party Concerns

A new national poll has revealed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as the second-most popular potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, sending shockwaves through party leadership and raising questions about Democrats’ electoral strategy moving forward.

The Quantus Insights survey, conducted April 21-23, shows former Vice President Kamala Harris leading the field with 30 percent support among likely Democratic voters.

Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive firebrand and member of “The Squad,” secured 14 percent support, outpacing established politicians including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

This surprising result comes as Democrats appear increasingly divided on their party’s direction.

Quantus noted on social media platform X that while Ocasio-Cortez isn’t leading the party, “more voters now believe she represents it than Biden or Obama.”

The self-described Democratic Socialist’s ascendance has prompted concerns among moderate Democrats about the party’s leftward shift.

Ocasio-Cortez’s signature policies, including the Green New Deal and critiques of capitalism, remain controversial among general election voters, potentially complicating Democrats’ Electoral College strategy.

The poll further reveals a fragmented Democratic field with no clear consensus candidate.

Behind Harris and Ocasio-Cortez, Buttigieg and Booker are tied at 13 percent, followed by Newsom (7 percent), Bernie Sanders (6 percent), and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz at 5 percent each.

A substantial 20 percent of respondents indicated they were “unsure” or preferred “none of the above.”

This leadership vacuum contrasts sharply with Republicans’ unity around President Donald Trump, who enjoys 91 percent approval among GOP voters in his second term.

Trump currently holds a 47.7 percent job approval rating nationally, with 49.8 percent disapproving of his performance.

His favorability ratings show a similar split: 46.8 percent view him favorably against 49.3 percent unfavorably.

Democrats appear equally divided on their party’s ideological direction.

The survey found exactly half of Democratic voters want the party to move toward more moderate positions, while the other half prefer maintaining the current progressive trajectory or embracing even more left-leaning policies.

Political analysts suggest this ideological standoff could hamper the party’s ability to build a winning coalition in 2028.

A CNN poll from earlier this year revealed Ocasio-Cortez is gaining popularity among Democratic voters, with political analysts drawing parallels to the Tea Party’s emergence following Barack Obama’s 2008 election.

The poll showed Ocasio-Cortez ranking as the top choice when Democrats were asked which leader “best represents” the party’s core values.

10 percent of Democratic respondents named Ocasio-Cortez as the leader who best embodies Democratic principles, according to the SSRS poll released on March 16.

Axios reporter Alex Isenstadt noted that AOC’s political ascent mirrors Republican dynamics after Obama’s presidency, TTOA outlined.

“Her rise kind of reminds me of what happened to Republicans after Obama’s election in 2008 where it was the loudest voices of the Republican Party, the Tea Party, that really gained traction at a time when the Republican Party was lost,” Isenstadt said.

When asked about Ocasio-Cortez’s potential presidential prospects in 2028, Isenstadt responded, “Well, if that’s what the party wants, then potentially,” suggesting her growing influence could translate into broader political opportunities.
