Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks Abruptly Resigns

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks abruptly announced his resignation on Thursday, saying it was “just time” to step down after leading the agency through a major shift in immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s second administration.

Banks, who took over the role in January 2025, said he believes the border is now in a stronger position as he exits public service.

“It’s just time,” Banks told Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, adding, “I feel like I got the ship back on course. From the least secure disastrous chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen. Time to pass the reigns, 37 years its time to enjoy the family and life.”

He said he plans to retire after a 37-year career in law enforcement and military service.

Banks’ departure was confirmed by multiple outlets and comes amid a broader wave of leadership changes inside the federal immigration enforcement system.

He was appointed by Trump in early 2025 after serving as Texas border czar under Gov. Greg Abbott (R), marking an unusual political appointment for a position traditionally held by career officials within Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

In a farewell message to staff, Banks praised Border Patrol personnel and credited them with reversing what he described as years of border instability.

“What we have accomplished together in the last year and a half is nothing short of amazing,” he wrote, adding that agents had delivered “the most secure border this country has ever seen.”

He also noted his personal decision to return to family life and his ranch in Texas.

Banks’ resignation adds to a series of high-profile exits within the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement leadership.

TTOA previously reported that several senior officials across the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have stepped down or been replaced in recent months, including leadership changes involving acting ICE Director Todd Lyons and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s earlier firing.

Supporters of the administration’s immigration policy credited Banks with restoring morale and tightening enforcement along the southern border.

During his tenure, Border Patrol operations expanded beyond traditional border zones, with agents assisting in interior enforcement actions in major cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles, a shift that sparked debate over federal immigration priorities, according to CBS News.

Banks’ career has spanned more than two decades in border patrol, following earlier service in the U.S. Navy.

He previously worked under multiple operational units within the agency and later served in leadership roles after joining in 2000.

Before returning to federal service as chief, he worked as Texas’ border czar, where he aligned closely with state-level enforcement efforts along the U.S.–Mexico border.

He has often described his upbringing in modest circumstances in Georgia and credited his early experiences working alongside migrant laborers with shaping his views on discipline and public service.

Those personal details were highlighted in agency materials and interviews cited in previous CBP profiles.

The White House has not yet announced who will permanently replace Banks, and it remains unclear whether an acting chief will be named in the interim.

His resignation leaves another leadership gap in a federal agency that has been central to President Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda since returning to office.

Despite stepping down, Banks framed his departure as the conclusion of a mission he believes was successful.

“Time to pass the reigns,” he said, emphasizing his view that the border situation had been stabilized under his leadership after years of record migration challenges.
