‘Not a Typical Accident’: Death of CEO Angela Chao Under Criminal Investigation

Authorities have initiated a “criminal investigation” into the death of Angela Chao, the CEO of Foremost Group.

Chao was discovered deceased in a vehicle that had submerged in a pond on a Texas ranch. Elaine Chao, Angela’s sister, is best known as the spouse of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

A public information officer from the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office informed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that, for the moment, requests for access to 911 call logs and video evidence should be denied, according to a report by CNBC. The sheriff’s office, in correspondence with the attorney general, mentioned that the incident “was not a typical accident.”

“Although the preliminary investigation indicated this was an unfortunate accident, the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this accident as a criminal matter until they have sufficient evidence to rule out criminal activity,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The ranch where Chao’s body was found is connected to her husband, Jim Breyer, a venture capitalist. Angela Chao assumed leadership of the Foremost Group, a shipping company founded by her father, James S.C. Chao, in 2018.

“Angela Chao was a formidable executive and shipping industry leader, as well as a proud and loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife, and mother,” the company expressed in a statement. “She was also a precocious youngster, learning about the shipping industry at an early age as she lovingly followed her father around during ‘Take Your Daughter to Work’ days on his ships.”

Elaine Chao, Angela’s sister, has served as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and is married to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Business Insider has reached out to the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office for further comments.
